Grateful Dead Saga: Into the Dark Star

By 1968, the Grateful Dead were no longer content to simply play songs. They wanted to see how far the music could go. In the studio, onstage, and deep inside sprawling improvisations like “Dark Star,” the band began bending the boundaries between composition and discovery. With Robert Hunter’s words giving Garcia’s music a language all its own, albums like Anthem of the Sun, Aoxomoxoa, and Live/Dead captured a group willing to experiment, fail, rebuild, and follow the music wherever it led. This was the Dead pushing psychedelia toward its outer limits, just before an unexpected turn would bring them back to the song.
